A pensioner who robbed a bank because he would ‘rather be in jail than with his wife’ has been sentenced to home confinement.

After arguing with his wife, he finally had enough, and 70-year-old Lawrence John Ripple walked into a Bank of Labor branch in Kansas City and robbed it — not for money, but to get away from his spouse.

Ripple handed the teller a note demanding cash and claiming he had a gun.

He took nearly $3,000, then calmly sat down in the lobby, told a security guard he was the robber, and waited for police to arrive.

In a twist of irony, the judge sentenced him to six months of home confinement (house arrest), three years of probation, and 50 hours of community service — sending him right back to the home he tried to escape.

The unusual case quickly drew public attention due to the man’s blunt explanation for the robbery. Despite the seriousness of the crime, the court reportedly considered factors including his age and personal circumstances before deciding on home confinement rather than a traditional jail sentence.
