The trial may have officially ended, but some of the most emotional moments came after the verdict had already been delivered.
Karmelo Anthony was found guilty of murdering Texas teenager Austin Metcalf during a deadly confrontation at a high school track meet on April 2, 2025. After less than three hours of deliberation, a Collin County jury unanimously convicted him of murder.
While Anthony remained mostly expressionless as the verdict was read, emotions quickly overwhelmed others inside the courtroom. His mother, Kala Hayes, broke down in tears, while members of the Metcalf family sat silently absorbing the decision.
The trial then shifted into the sentencing phase, where Anthony’s attorneys argued the stabbing happened under “sudden passion,” a legal claim that could have reduced his punishment.
Before jurors decided the sentence, Anthony’s mother took the stand and tearfully pleaded for mercy.
“He’s my oldest. He’ll always be my baby,” she told jurors. “I love him very much.”
She also insisted her son felt deep remorse for what happened.
Then came one of the most emotional moments of the case.
Austin’s twin brother, Hunter Metcalf, addressed Anthony directly during his victim impact statement. After asking Anthony to look him in the eye, Hunter described the devastating pain of losing not only his brother, but also his best friend.
“You took a son, a brother, a friend, and my best friend from this world,” Hunter said emotionally.
He spoke about watching his mother cry herself to sleep and struggling to face life without his twin.
“Now I want everything taken from you,” he added.
Hours later, jurors returned with their sentencing decision. They rejected the defense’s “sudden passion” argument and sentenced Anthony to 35 years in state prison. Under Texas law, he must serve at least half that sentence before becoming eligible for parole.
As the sentence was announced, observers said Anthony broke down crying while his family became emotional once again.
The trial may now be over, but the courtroom’s final hours revealed the lasting grief, heartbreak, and consequences left behind by a tragedy that changed two families forever.
