Rep. Jan Schakowsky stumbled on the House floor while criticizing President Donald Trump and his “One Big Beautiful Bill” during a debate over the legislation.
The incident occurred amid intense negotiations as lawmakers worked toward a July 4 deadline for the bill. Schakowsky, 81, has been a vocal opponent of the measure, arguing it would reduce healthcare access while benefiting wealthy Americans. Earlier in the week, she posted on social media that she was a “HELL NO” vote on the legislation.
The debate also featured a lengthy speech by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who used the House’s “magic minute” rule to speak for hours against the bill.
Questions about the age of elected officials have remained a topic of discussion in Washington following recent concerns about the fitness of senior political leaders. Schakowsky previously announced that she will not seek reelection in 2026, ending a congressional career that began in 1999.

Despite strong Democratic opposition, the House narrowly passed the “One Big Beautiful Bill” by a vote of 218-214, sending the legislation to Trump’s desk.
The bill permanently extends key provisions of the 2017 tax cuts, eliminates taxes on many tips and overtime earnings, and includes changes to Medicaid eligibility requirements. It also provides funding for border security initiatives, including additional resources for construction along the U.S.-Mexico border.
Supporters say the legislation fulfills major campaign promises and promotes economic growth, while critics argue it could reduce benefits for vulnerable Americans and increase inequality.
