World skydiving champion, 37, plummets to his death after parachute fails to open

Two-time world wingsuit skydiving champion Pierre Wolnik has died after a tragic accident during a high-risk jump over Mont Blanc in the French Alps.

The 37-year-old athlete was attempting a free-fall descent from a helicopter above the Mont Blanc massif on February 7. According to Le Figaro, his parachute failed to deploy. He was later found in the village of Les Bossons and pronounced dead at the scene.

Wolnik was a two-time Freefly World Champion, winning titles in 2022 and 2024, and had been selected to represent France at the 2026 FAI World Championships. He also worked as a videographer for the Fédération Française de Parachutisme, sharing footage of elite skydiving with a wide audience.

In a statement, federation president Yves-Marie Guillaud paid tribute, calling Wolnik a talented athlete with a warm smile and offering condolences to his family and teammates.

His death has deeply affected the international skydiving community, where he was admired for both his skill and character.
