The quiet desert foothills of Arizona have become the center of a troubling mystery following the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today anchor Savannah Guthrie.
Nancy was last seen Saturday night, January 31, after her family dropped her off at home around 9:30 p.m. When she failed to appear at church the next morning, concern grew. Police were notified shortly after noon on Sunday, February 1. Investigators are now focusing on a narrow window between late Saturday night and Sunday morning.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos described the situation as “very concerning,” confirming that foul play has not been ruled out. Nancy’s home is being treated as a crime scene, and homicide detectives are involved. Authorities noted that she is physically frail, relies on daily medication, and uses a cane—making it unlikely she left on her own. Her phone, purse, ID, and keys were all found at home.
Neighbors reported seeing dark vans, police vehicles, and helicopters in the area, and were asked to review security footage from the early morning hours. While officials initially considered the possibility that Nancy wandered into the nearby desert, residents said the rugged terrain and her limited mobility make that scenario doubtful.
Investigators now believe she was taken from her home. “This is an 84-year-old woman who should have been safe in her own bed,” Sheriff Nanos said. Customs and Border Protection have joined the search due to the home’s proximity to the U.S.-Mexico border.
Savannah Guthrie has been in Arizona during the investigation and was absent from the Today show. A statement read on her behalf thanked the public for their support and urged anyone with information to contact authorities.
