Rep. Pramila Jayapal is facing criticism after saying she spoke with foreign ambassadors about helping Cuba address severe fuel shortages despite long-standing U.S. sanctions on the communist government.

During a recent event in Seattle, Jayapal said she discussed possible ways to get oil to Cuba after visiting the island as part of a congressional delegation. She described the humanitarian situation there as “a crisis beyond imagination” and said understanding the effects of U.S. policy was part of her role as a lawmaker.

The comments sparked backlash from conservatives and the White House. White House spokesperson Olivia Wales accused Democrats of undermining American interests and supporting hostile regimes. Conservative commentators on social media also questioned whether Jayapal’s actions crossed legal lines.

Rep. Brandon Gill criticized Jayapal for appearing to support Cuba’s communist government, arguing that lawmakers should prioritize American interests over aiding foreign adversaries.

Jayapal’s remarks have fueled another heated political debate over U.S. policy toward Cuba, humanitarian concerns, and the role members of Congress should play in foreign affairs.
