Hilary Holley defeated Edwin Pérez in a special election for Florida House District 51, winning about 55% of the vote and keeping the seat in Republican control.
Holley will replace term-limited Josie Tomkow in the Polk County-based district. Despite Democratic hopes for a pickup, GOP voter registration and a major fundraising advantage helped secure the win.
Holley, who leads the Florida FFA Foundation, emphasized her agricultural background. Pérez focused on affordability and local school funding concerns.
Meanwhile, Hakeem Jeffries criticized the Republican-backed SAVE America Act, led by Chip Roy and Mike Lee. The bill would require proof of citizenship and voter ID for federal elections, with Republicans arguing it strengthens election security and Democrats warning of potential voter suppression.
The House is expected to vote on the measure soon.
