Darren kept talking about overdue rent, truck repairs, and medical bills.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to do the right thing,\u201d I told him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I want one lucky break,\u201d he snapped.<\/p>\n<p>That night, I couldn\u2019t sleep. I kept imagining someone desperately searching for that wallet.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning, after Darren left for work, I took the wallet to the police station.<\/p>\n<p>The officer looked relieved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe already had a report filed this morning,\u201d he said. \u201cGuy sounded pretty devastated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Darren found out, he exploded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou WHAT?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat money belonged to someone else!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For days, he barely spoke to me.<\/p>\n<p>Then a week later, everything changed.<\/p>\n<p>Darren burst through the front door yelling, \u201cEmily! Look at the porch!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Taped to our front door was a colorful crayon drawing of two smiling stick figures with giant red hearts.<\/p>\n<p>Underneath, in shaky handwriting, were the words:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you for being good people!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A man stood on the sidewalk holding the hand of a little boy in a wheelchair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat wallet was mine,\u201d the father said softly. \u201cMy name\u2019s Alex.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice cracked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat money was for my son\u2019s surgery equipment and therapy payments. When I lost it, I sat in my car and cried.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The little boy smiled shyly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is Joshua,\u201d Alex said.<\/p>\n<p>Joshua lifted a small hand. \u201cI made the picture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s beautiful,\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n<p>Then Joshua looked at Darren and grinned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom says good people are superheroes,\u201d he said. \u201cYou both look like superheroes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I glanced at my husband.<\/p>\n<p>The anger and pride were gone.
