Jackson Protests as SCOTUS Uses Gerrymandering Ruling To Instruct Lower Courts

Ketanji Brown Jackson dissented after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against Louisiana’s congressional map, saying the court improperly guided lower courts on voting rights issues tied to Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act.

In Louisiana v. Callais, the court found Louisiana was not required to create a second majority-Black district and ruled the map relied too heavily on race, making it unconstitutional. Justice Jackson argued the decision could weaken protections for minority voters and affect future voting rights cases.

The ruling is expected to impact redistricting battles nationwide, with supporters calling it a defense of equal protection under the Constitution, while critics warn it could reduce minority representation and strengthen partisan gerrymandering.
